Moody Motorcycle

Guthrie et Thorburn sont des noms bien connus de la scène pop canadienne. Jim est surtout connu pour ses parutions sur Three Gut Records, tant avec le groupe Royal City qu'en solo et en 2004, il a reçu une nomination aux Prix Juno pour Now, More Than Ever. Thorburn, pour sa part, s'est d'abord fait connaître sur la scène internationale avec son group Unicorns en 2003, et il évolue désormais au sein du supergroupe pop Islands. Les deux artistes se sont rencontrés pendant l'enregistrement du premier album de Islands. Guthrie faisait partie du groupe de tournée original et a participé à l'enregistrement. Ce n'était donc qu'une question de temps avant que leur admiration mutuelle ne se transforme en collaboration.

C'est presque une Lapalissade de dire que Human Highway a vu le jour sur la route. «Dans mon souvenir, Human Highway a vu le jour dans une chambre d'hôtel pendant une tournée avec Islands, raconte Guthrie. Nick m'a fait entendre une chanson magnifique intitulée My Beach et m'a demandé si j'avais envie de l'aider à l'enregistrer. Il la jouait et la chantait tandis que je me chargeais des harmonies vocales.» À ce moment-là, la paire ne songeait pas à enregistrer un album. Thorburn poursuivait ses tournées et l'enregistrement du prochain album de Islands (Arm's Way, paru récemment), tandis que Guthrie travaillait sur son propre matériel chez lui à Toronto. Puis, un jour, ils ont décidé que le temps était venu de terminer ce qu'ils avaient entrepris. En 2007, Thorburn a passé une semaine avec Guthrie dans son appartement torontois, et le résultat fût Moody Motorcycle.

Ok, so it was only full of employees and members of Adam & the Amethysts (Miracle Fortress fans take note!), but still. Nick Thorburn Pitchfork Interview

"There's a time and a place for trying everything, but there's no explicit genre-specific which came with this record. That was just kind of what we underlined it with just to give it some perspective, some placement. It's not pastiche; it's not like we're doing "Earth Angel" or whatever, and it sounded so ridiculous. It's just that we're both fans of the music-- the Everly Brothers and early Simon and Garfunkel or whatever. We're just trying to sing together. I love Jim's harmonies and wanted to harmonize."
