In Conflict is full of love songs— more specifically, songs about liminal states and our loved ones locked in battle with them. “The record is meant to approach ‘insanity’ in a positive way,” Owen says— emphasis on the ironizing scare quotes around singular notions of insanity. “Depression, addiction, gender trouble, and the creative state are presented as positive, loveable, empathetic ways of being. Not preferable, per se, but all as equal, valid positions that we experience, which make us human.” The songs are pretty but deeply unnerving — they cause discomfort in sensuous & seductive ways. While made with the rigor of a classicist, this isn’t classical music or even indie-classical music. Pallett is not just “approved of” by Establishment Art Music people (though he is)— he is also beloved for his accessibility; for the way his art reflects & resonates with Mainstream Pop Culture; for the emotionally cathartic outlet his music provides.

Originally self-released in limited quantities in 2003, Just Another Ordinary Day is the first set of Patrick Watson recordings featuring the band's current lineup. Wooden Arms is Patrick Watson’s highly anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed Close to Paradise, which vaulted the man and his band to international stardom in 2007. The Montreal band toured non-stop for two years following initial Canadian release of Close to Paradise in 2006, and in many ways Wooden Arms is the story and sound of a band waking up in strange places all around the world.
Moody Motorcycle is a collection of songs by Human Highway, the new collaboration between two of Canada's most-loved troubadours: Jim Guthrie and Nick Thorburn. Fittingly, Human Highway began on the road. “For me, Human Highway started in a hotel room on a U.S. tour with Islands,” Guthrie says. “Nick had this rad song called 'My Beach' and asked me if I wanted to help him record it. He played and sang at the same time and let me be for a bit to do harmonies.” Over a year later Thorburn spent a week with Guthrie in his Toronto apartment in 2007, and Moody Motorcycle was the resulting love-child.
Three years in the making, Parc Avenue is a sprawling on-the-road opus from Plants and Animals. Filled with three-part epics, African rhythms, sea-shanty anthems and folky ballads, Parc Avenue is a monumental release in the sense of classic rock and roll re-invented.
