For the last three years, singer-songwriter, musician and producer Jesse Mac Cormack has collaborated with many artists on the Montreal music scene, including Emilie & Ogden, Melanie Boulay and Rosie Valland. His first EP, Music For The Soul (2014), delivers a very personal acoustic sound, while his second EP, CRUSH (2014), is encompassed by electric guitar and full band. His pristine and heartfelt vocals and lyrics arise from his personal journeys and a soothing, warm influence emerges in his surroundings. His music is painfully healing.

We're very excited to be releasing a new EP this week called Alta Falls. The 5 songs on this record are some of our favorite misfits from the Sleeping Operator sessions. The cover art is by our elusive friend Madame Gilles, whose posters have been anonymously gracing the telephone poles of Montreal for years. At this time, the EP will be available in digital format only. Warmest Regards, The Barr Brothers Buy Alta Falls on iTunes || Listen to the EP on Spotify TRACK LISTING 1. Oscilla 2. Burn Card 3. The Barr Brothers are thrilled to announce the release of their long-awaited follow-up, the intense and expansive ‘Sleeping Operator,’ out October 7 on Secret City Records.
In Conflict is full of love songs— more specifically, songs about liminal states and our loved ones locked in battle with them. “The record is meant to approach ‘insanity’ in a positive way,” Owen says— emphasis on the ironizing scare quotes around singular notions of insanity. “Depression, addiction, gender trouble, and the creative state are presented as positive, loveable, empathetic ways of being. Not preferable, per se, but all as equal, valid positions that we experience, which make us human.” The songs are pretty but deeply unnerving — they cause discomfort in sensuous & seductive ways. While made with the rigor of a classicist, this isn’t classical music or even indie-classical music. Pallett is not just “approved of” by Establishment Art Music people (though he is)— he is also beloved for his accessibility; for the way his art reflects & resonates with Mainstream Pop Culture; for the emotionally cathartic outlet his music provides.
Turning Rocks is the third album by transatlantic band Thus Owls. It’s both a scrapbook of memories and oral transmissions from an island in Sweden, and a sonic experiment in tone and colour recorded in Montreal by a band clearly finding its footing. Cover album art by Daniel Aronson
Deluxe re-issue of Owen Pallett's 2010 album Heartland. The third album by Owen Pallett, is a panoramic and orchestral work; a song cycle of Contemporary Fiction.
The third album from Toronto's golden-voiced Basia Bulat.
The sophomore album from Montreal's rising dark stars, Suuns.
The sophomore offering from Toronto's Diamond Rings, aka John O'Regan, produced by . Free Dimensional retains the melodicism, clever juxtapositions, and lyrical honesty that garnered kudos for 2010 debut, Special Affections, but ups the execution with the help of producer Damian Taylor (Bjork, Austra).
The missing link between Plants and Animals 2008 debut, Parc Avenue, and 2010’s darker La La Land. The End of That is Plants and Animals most live off-the-floor offering, reintegrating their acoustic roots and lots of piano, while still delivering the catchy guitar hooks and multi-part anthems.
The first single from Plants and Animals third LP, The End of That.
The debut album from The Barr Brothers.
High Twilight is an ambitious work that makes no reservations about diving into big classic themes like love and death, sex and myth. Musically the motifs are each given their own respective treatment, as the record features everything from Americana to French chanson and even a touch of Dixieland. But it’s Daniel’s voice, both literally and figuratively, that strings the album together and manages to make it somehow sound both contemporary and timeless.
The debut full-length from Toronto-based recording artist Diamond Rings.
Limited edition 7" single for the Something Else from the forthcoming full-length, Special Affections. With B-side cover of Milla Jovovich's "Gentleman Who Fell" featuring Owen Pallett.
The sequel to their debut, Parc Avenue, La La Land keeps the tape rolling, and digs a little deeper into the barrel. Drink 2010-2030.
“I think it is at times extremely sparse and, well, spacious, with big choirs singing,” Bulat says, “and then it gets really dense with really spirited and rolling drums.”
Originally self-released in limited quantities in 2003, Just Another Ordinary Day is the first set of Patrick Watson recordings featuring the band's current lineup. At the time this album was made, the band was playing regular two-set gigs at the now defunct but legendary Cafe Sarajevo in Montreal, drawing bigger and bigger crowds. Fans of both Wooden Arms and Close to Paradise will find plenty to love hear, as it features plenty of ethereal soundscapes and also some of the band's most accessible, playful pop.
Wooden Arms is Patrick Watson’s highly anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed Close to Paradise, which vaulted the man and his band to international stardom in 2007. The Montreal band toured non-stop for two years following initial Canadian release of Close to Paradise in 2006, and in many ways Wooden Arms is the story and sound of a band waking up in strange places all around the world.
Moody Motorcycle is a collection of songs by Human Highway, the new collaboration between two of Canada's most-loved troubadours: Jim Guthrie and Nick Thorburn. Fittingly, Human Highway began on the road. “For me, Human Highway started in a hotel room on a U.S. tour with Islands,” Guthrie says. “Nick had this rad song called 'My Beach' and asked me if I wanted to help him record it. He played and sang at the same time and let me be for a bit to do harmonies.” Over a year later Thorburn spent a week with Guthrie in his Toronto apartment in 2007, and Moody Motorcycle was the resulting love-child.
Three years in the making, Parc Avenue is a sprawling on-the-road opus from Plants and Animals. Filled with three-part epics, African rhythms, sea-shanty anthems and folky ballads, Parc Avenue is a monumental release in the sense of classic rock and roll re-invented.
Plants and Animals' first Secret City offering. Four songs (or is that eight?), 25 minutes, all wildlife.
